Weekly Workout Reflection for Sunday, February 5th to Saturday, February 11th

Wow. This past week has felt long. My school administered standardized testing to the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades; the 12th grade, like always, was exempt from testing. Due to the testing, the regular class schedule changed, and on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, I did not have to be at school until 1:20pm. The final bell rings at 3:15pm. Less than two hours of school? Hooray! I used my free mornings to work on scholarship applications and study diagram after diagram after diagram of the skeletal system for my Anatomy and Physiology class. I think being at home, seemingly constantly engrossed in some sort of writing or studying, made the week feel long. I feel as if I have a lot of studying (more skeletal system diagrams + art history) to do and homework (motion/movement project for my Digital Photography class) to complete this weekend, but I am trying to remember to stay relaxed and practical.

My workout goal for this past week was to listen to my body. I believe I achieved this goal, as I opted to complete an elliptical workout instead of a treadmill workout on Tuesday and a treadmill workout instead of a weight lifting workout on Friday.

Tuesday- I think incorporating an elliptical workout once a week is good for my body because it is usually not as challenging as a running workout (although it still gets my heart pumpin’ and my legs shakin’). It also gives my legs a chance to be “worked out” and recover from previous workouts in the week, as there is no pounding involved.

Friday- My track coach–the first day of practice is Monday!–told the out-of-season, soon-to-be-in-season track girls that we could take Friday off from lifting. My back as been sore lately, and so I decided to exchange a day of strength training for an additional day of cardio training. I debated between using the elliptical and the treadmill to fulfill my cardio workout. I wanted to get a little running in, so I told myself that I had to at least complete a mile on the treadmill before finishing my cardio workout on the elliptical. In the back of my mind, however, I aspired to run more than a mile, but I wanted to allow myself the option of using the elliptical if my mind needed it. In the end, I did not use the elliptical at all! I completed a run that balanced relaxing and more challenging paces. My treadmill workout left a smile on my face; after a stressful week, it was the perfect way for me to relieve stress and focus on something other than my obligations as a student.

The first phase of my P.E. Independent Study is complete, which means that this is my last Weekly Workout Reflection. My Workout Log will continue to be updated, but now with track workouts! On Monday, I will begin the second phase, which will focus on fitness and/or health related projects.
